Montpelier Races-2013
One of the premier events in Orange County will be held this Saturday, November 2nd, the Montpelier Races will be held at the Montpelier Estate, the home of President James Madison, the 4th President of the United States. This annual event has been continuously held since 1934, when Marion DuPont Scott, America’s First Lady of racing, inaugurated this great Orange County tradition, the Montpelier Hunt Races are always held on the first Saturday in November.
This year’s weather forecast is for a beautiful autumn day with sunshine and moderate temperatures. Although the event is always fun, the weather this year promises to make the day even better, as the autumnal fall foliage will be spectacular as well.
For the past nine years, we have attended this event which features seven races, five of which highlight the traditional steeplechase jumps covering a two mile course. To the delight of the spectators hanging on the railing, the thundering hooves of the approaching horses foreshadow a spectacular array of colorful silks and amazing skills of the jockeys working as one with one of the most impressive creatures of the animal world, the thoroughbred. There are multiple vantage points around the grounds, but everyone seems to have their favorite spot, as many families have made the races their traditional first Saturday in November for years.
In addition to the featured event, the races also include the very popular Jack Russell Terrier race, which is always a crowd favorite. Although I love the races, I also love to shop! At the center of the grounds, crafters, clothiers, and specialty foods provide a diversion from the races. My husband goes for the kettle-corn, prepared in a large copper pot the old-fashion way, for me it’s hats, gloves, scarves or hand-made jewelry that are irresistible.
This Orange County time-honored tradition is one not to miss. Come early as the crowds are large, but I can guarantee a great time-especially since the weather promises to be spectacular! Bring some cash for “betting” on the races.
