About Culpeper, Virginia
The city of Culpeper is located between Charlottesville and Washington D.C. Bordered by the the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers, Culpeper offers historic charm and friendly people. Chartered in 1749 and named after Lord Culpeper the Colonial Governor of Virginia between 1680-1683, the town and County Of Culpeper was surveyed by a 17 year old named George Washington. So the town indeed has a deeply rooted history. Culpeper resident John Jameson was instrumental in uncovering the treasonous plot of Benedict Arnold during the Revolutionary War.
Because of its strategic location and railroad, Culpeper assumed a major role during the Civil War where over 100 battles were fought. The Civil War caused a great deal of destruction to Culpeper which took many years to re-develop.
Today the Town of Culpeper and surrounding areas offer a wide variety of recreational activities, an enchanting historic district with unique restaurants, antique stores, boutiques and the charm of a well-preserved “Old Town”.
With a population of over 45,000 people in Culpeper County and over 15,000 in the Town limits, this area is an important crossroads for business. Agriculture, vineyards, wineries, retail shopping centers, and restaurants as well as many cultural and recreational activities offer residents an excellent quality of life, as evidenced as its selection as one America’s Top Small Towns.
